- Allow infrequently used characters of ASCII to be replaced:

- Japanese variant (ISO-646-JP): \ ⇒ ¥, ~ ⇒〜
- More than 25 variants: Danish, Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, Yugoslavia, ...
- No mixing allowed, only one language covered at the same time
- Still 7-bit, limited to 94 visible characters
